Senior
Tutor – University of Manchester, School of Law
In
my capacity as a Senior Tutor since October 2021, I provide comprehensive
academic advice to hundreds of advisees enrolled on the Law LLB programme. This
involves a wide variety of activities, ranging from conducting 1:1 meetings on a
specific issue(s) to delivering skills’ workshops aimed at legal-academic
development. In particular, it is necessary as part of this role to maintain an
awareness of high-level policy, for instance, the legal duty to refer those
with disabilities to the Disability Advisory and Support Service (DASS), and engage in continuing professional development.
Course
Instructor - University of Leeds, School of Law
In
my role as a Course Instructor since October 2016, specialising in human rights
and constitutional law, I regularly research and keep abreast of the latest
developments in these fields. I also have significant teaching experience in a
range of modules, including “Constitutional and Administrative Law”,
“Foundations of Law (Jurisprudence)”, and “European Union Law”, amongst others,
and instruct approximately a third of the cohort on the Law LLB programme. This
role necessitates strong presentation and oral communication skills as well as
the ability to keep pace with the latest legal and political developments.
Policy
Assistant – Member of Parliament (MP)
As
a Policy (Administrative) Assistant, since January 2019, I have dealt with
constituents’ policy-related queries on a variety of issues, ranging from
environmental policy to foreign affairs as part of our international order.
When a constituent contacts the office, I input information related to their
case on the system. This requires me to be accurate and organised, and pay
close attention to detail. After this, I exercise my own judgment in deciding
the most appropriate response. For example, some queries have to be replied to
individually, while others can be dealt with in bulk form, especially if it
concerns the same subject matter. A select few require writing to Government
Departments and Ministers, and partially feeding back Ministerial responses to
the constituent(s) that initially raised the issue. This is a varied role that
changes from day-to-day, which requires adaptability and the ability to
effectively manage what can be a highly pressurised environment. Moreover, I
have helped to influence changes in policymaking by writing to Government
Ministers on behalf of constituents on a range of issues, including child
citizenship fees, prescription charge exemptions, reviews into discrimination,
and reviews into criminal law reform. These high-level policy discussions have
the potential to positively affect millions of lives not only locally in
Manchester, but also nationally across the United Kingdom.
Project
Manager – Ardwick Advice Centre (AAC)
In
my other position as a Project Manager for the Ardwick Advice Centre (AAC),
since February 2019, I again regularly manage cases and keep files up-to-date.
This includes arranging appointments with clients and recording key case notes.
This information is then inputted electronically and stored confidentially in
line with overarching data protection requirements. For instance, if a client
presented with a housing issue, then I would decide on the most appropriate
course of action, whether that be a simple letter the client has to send to
their landlord or if it is something that needs to be referred to the local
authorities, such as for a habitability inspection. Assessing the appropriate
level of help and support required in a case presupposes excellent
administration, otherwise the advice centre could not function effectively and
appropriately allocate resources. Some cases require further resources and have
involved me representing clients before Tribunals and as a McKenzie friend in
the Family Court.
Legal
Assistant – Survivors of Symphysiotomy (SoS)
As
a Legal Assistant at the Survivors of Symphysiotomy (SoS) Group in Ireland from
December 2009-June 2015, I provided support to counsel in the legal actions
brought against the state for their role in the abuse of the rights of pregnant
women. Specifically, I wrote factual accounts on behalf of the victims that
were subsequently tendered in evidence for review by the lawyers representing
the women as part of a group action. This issue was very close to home, as my
mother had also suffered substantial disabilities as a result of this
injustice. Additionally, I prepared documents to be submitted before various
United Nations Committees, such as the Committee on the Elimination of all Forms
of Discrimination Against Women (CEDAW), amongst others. In my mother’s case,
this led to a successful outcome of substantial compensation being awarded from
the Irish state to compensate for her having sustained lifelong and substantial
disabilities. This was a very sensitive case and required the effective
management of multiple interests, including the effective mediation between
individuals and the group as well as with state institutions.
Notable
Projects:

Graduate Study Programme (UN GSP) 2020 – involved presenting an original
project to the Secretary-General's Executive Team on the theme of the 'United
Nations at 75: Shaping Our Future Together'.
