Introduction

The main themes of the Fellowship are those of developing statistical models of the appearance of objects in images, and exploring the corresponding search techniques to allow new objects to be located in new images.

We have done work on locating collections of features which give cues to the position of a target object in an image [1]. A method of representing shape variation as a probability density function, and approximating the PDF using a mixture model has been explored [7]. We have developed a new method of representing the whole appearance of an object such as a face, and a new search algorithm for matching such a model to an image [10,11,12].
