Hochschild Homology and the Closed Geodesics Problem

John McCleary (Vassar College)

Via Morse theory the problem of the existence of infinitely many closed geodesics on a given Riemannian manifold can be reduced to computing the homology of the free loop space of the manifold. Using Hochschild homology this computation can be made more accessible leading to an approach to a generalization of the theorem of Vigue-Poirrier and Sullivan.
