Research

I am a Research Fellow in the Faculty of Life Sciences at the University of Manchester. I work on the computational biology of RNA genes -- that is, genes which encode functional RNA molecules, rather than translated proteins, sometimes called non-coding RNAs (ncRNA). I have more general interests in genome analysis.

I was previously a Postdoc (2001-2002) in Alex Bateman's lab and then Project Leader (2003-2006) at the Wellcome Trust Sanger Institute. I founded and managed the Rfam database of non-coding RNA families and the miRBase microRNA database. I continue to collaborate in the generation of Rfam, and I remain in charge of miRBase.

Databases

miRBase is the standard database of microRNA genes and targets. I am responsible for miRNA gene nomenclature, and for maintaining official lists of miRNAs in animal, plant and viral genomes. [more]

Rfam is a database of families of structured RNAs. [more]

Software

RALEE -- RNA ALignment Editor in Emacs -- is a fully featured RNA alignment editor implemented as a major mode for Emacs. [more]

Positions

PhD students:

I have RNA computational biology projects available to start in 2009. Please contact me informally for more information.

Postdoctoral researchers:

I have space in the lab for talented postdoctoral researchers with interests in RNA computational biology. Prospective postdocs are encouraged to seek funding in the form of a fellowship or other award. Please contact me for informal discussion about projects and funding.
