Applications are invited for a summer internship at the University of Manchester, funded by the National Institute for Health Research (NIHR) Research Methods Programme and aimed at individuals interested in a career in medical statistics.
NIHR Research Methods Internships are aimed at the brightest undergraduates (e.g. in mathematics, economics or physics) for the summer following the second year of their degree (or third year of a four year degree). The internship is full time and available for a period of 8 weeks between June and September 2018, although specific dates can be agreed with the successful candidate.
The internship will be based at The University of Manchester on Oxford Road, Manchester and hosted by the Centre for Musculoskeletal Research, School of Biological Sciences. The intern will be supervised by Lucy Bull (NIHR Research Methods Fellow), Dr Jamie Sergeant (Lecturer in Biostatistics) and Dr Mark Lunt (Reader in Medical Statistics).
The intern will undertake a research project and write a scientific report on their work. They will have the opportunity to attend seminars and meetings, and to attend a national statistics conference. The internship will allow the intern to gain practical experience of the work of a statistician working in medical research in the academic and clinical sectors, whilst developing their understanding of statistical methods used in medical research. The successful candidate will be able to demonstrate an excellent academic record, the ability to work as part of a team, good organisational skills and knowledge of statistical software such as Stata or R.
