Litton Church of England primary school first opened its doors to local children in 1869. Its first Headmaster was one Peter Moores who, it turns out, was one of the areas first graffiti artists! During roof renovations a few years ago we came across an inscription carved into the main roof beams. It read: P.Moores Master 1869-1874
One can imagine Mr Moores climbing a ladder into the loft and, candle at his side, carving the message in beautifully worked lettering which, as far as we know, remained undiscovered for over 120 years! Other Heads have stayed longer than Mr Moores (we have a full list on display in our entrance hall) but none has left such a lasting impression on the place! The log books tell of pupil populations exceeding 100 in the small building which had a treble function at first - it was a school in the daytime, a library in the evenings and a church on Sundays.

Today

Currently there are 36 children with 2 teachers, a number which has shown considerable increase since a favourable OFSTED report three years ago. We are very proud of our family atmosphere, our relationship with our parents and the maturity with which our children develop. Children are with the same teacher for a 3 or 4 year span and we get to know them very well - year to year continuity difficulties simply don't exist. Our relatively small classes (17 Juniors and 19 Infants) mean that we can provide very close attention to the children's needs. A thriving Toddler group provides a needed local service and helps ensure our future numbers -

The school celebrated its 125 anniversary in 1994 and during the annual Wakes Week activities (always during the last full week of June) we decided to revive a local tradition - Maypole Dancing. The Horticultural Society still had a maypole, made by the grandfather of one of the older pupils then at the school. We followed the Victorian theme of our History topic and performed Maypole Dances in Victorian costume for visiting coach parties - we also sold them cakes and cups of tea and went around with our Victorian caps doffed to receive the new-fangled 7-sided coins we had heard were being used - for the purposes of scientific study back in the classroom you understand!

Each year since then we have marked Wakes Week in the same manner - we offer refreshments frequent dance displays in costume, and free access to our site which includes a large conservation area including a pond and a refurbished bird hide. We also have toilets! The torrential rain in 1997 led us to offer a Victorian Music Hall singalong in school instead. For the past 2 years the children have also taken on the decoration of one of the two well dressings displayed in the centre of the village.

You are very welcome to visit us during the Wakes Week period. Buy a copy of our Litton Link newsletter and you will have at the back of it some information about Well Dressing, a map of the village showing early water provision, up to the minute 'gossip' about school life and a crossword! We look forward to your visit.
