Roberto obtained a degree in Biochemistry in 1997 and completed a PhD in Biological Sciences in 2004, both from the University of Concepción in Chile. In 2004 Roberto held a postdoctoral position at the Roswell Park Cancer Institute in the USA before returning to the University of Concepción in 2005 as a research associate. He joined the Amaya lab in 2006 as a research associate at the Wellcome Trust/Cancer Research UK Gurdon Institute and relocated to the University of Manchester with the lab in 2006.

Roberto & Ximena had their first child, Alfonsina Paredes, in September 2007.
