If this is the first of these virtual lectures you have followed, please read this page. Otherwise you can go straight to the next slide (the handout).

1. Is this a "real" lecture?

This site is split into 11 sections, one for each week of the course. Each section has a "virtual lecture" on it like the one you're about to view.

This is a course which can be delivered both by "traditional", face-to-face lectures and "virtual" lectures like this. If you follow this through there is no reason why you should come to the "real" lecture. It works the other way too (no reason to follow this if you've already been to the "real" lecture).

However it may be that you did not quite understand something in the real lecture and want to cover that ground again. The virtual lecture can therefore help as a review of the week's teaching.

Note that regardless of whether you go to the real lectures or work through these virtual lectures, you should ensure you read the other online teaching materials in any given week. In several cases there are pages you should read before the relevant (real or virtual) lecture. These are noted in the lessons where they occur.

2. How to use these lectures

Treat these as far as possible as if they are "real" lectures. In other words:

  • put an hour aside in a time and place where you will not be interrupted (turn your mobile off!)
  • print out the handout and have it beside you as you work
  • if necessary, take written notes
  • when prompted, follow the instructions. These substitute for those points in the "real" lecture where the lecturer would have demonstrated something on the screen.

The advantage of these virtual lectures over the traditional sort is that if you are not understanding something, you can spend as much time as you like on a particular slide. Or, you can move back and forth through the topic list, using the menu on the left.
