Alternative Representations of Image Evidence

Using statistical models of the image intensities across an object works well where those intensities are predictable (eg medical images or in constrained inspection problems, for instance) but the method fails in unconstrained situations such as outdoor scenes. However, most objects will give rise to a set of edges in the image which form a characteristic shape. We have experimented with using Pairwise Geometric Histograms to select image edges which may correspond to the edges of a modelled object, and have shown how they can be incorporated into the ASM framework [6].
