Introduction

The main themes of the Fellowship are those of developing statistical models of the appearance of objects in images, and exploring the corresponding search techniques to allow new objects to be located in new images. In earlier work we developed the Active Shape Model (ASM), a framework for modelling and locating examples of flexible objects. An ASM consists of a statistical model of an objects shape, combined with a set of statistical models of the grey-level appearance of sub-parts of the object. A search strategy was developed which allowed the ASM to be used to locate examples of the object which appear in new images.

The last twelve months have been devoted to improving the performance of the ASM in several ways.
